Increasing sales by reducing customer risk: tRIAL LICENSING

A software trial is a version of your product that is specifically released for a potential customer (prospect) to test your software before purchasing.  The ability to allow prospects to try software before purchasing is a powerful sales and marketing tool.  When doing business with unknown entities, buyers are often hesitant to purchase software for fear there money will not be returned if the software does not work.  Therefore, they will only purchase software once they have tried it.

This creates several problems for software developers. First additional time and cost is required by developing and testing a limited (by time, functionality, usage) release.  It is also difficult to track what happens once the prospect receives the trial version.   Did the prospect use it?  If so, how frequently and on how many computers was it used?

pricing and licensing options

Flatburger’s ideal technology for offering trial versions is one that can create a trial version from the same codebase, have flexibility for offering different types of trials, and also one that can track usage of that trial once the prospect has downloaded it.   Furthermore, the evaluator is provided with an easy mechanism to immediately purchase the paid-for version of a module upon expiration of the trial.

Flatburger also allows the developer to limit the trial version to just those who you may have marketed a promotion code to.  In order to unlock the trial version, the prospect would have to know this promotion code.  This code could be sent in an email or displayed only on a particular directory so you can track distribution vehicles and marketing programs working best for you.

Trial Features:
  • Limit trial by fixed date, number of days, number of uses, limited featureset
  • Same codebase leveraged for all trial versions desired
